If you like racing by using a controller with lots of buttons instead of a real steering wheel, you will definitely have heard about the Gran Turismo franchise, the single reason why many racing/driving simulator fans bought Sony’s PlayStation over the years.

The first game came out in 1997, it alone taking five years to develop and polish – the series is at number 5 now, and with its huge variety of cars (1,086 in total) and events, it has attracted a following of its own since its 2010 release.

Now, 15 years on from the release of GT1, we are on the verge of getting the 6th installment in the series, which is what many believe that Sony is teasing in this new video.

The clip announces that something significant and relevant is set to happen today (15 May), at the Silverstone track in the UK. “Five Gran Turismo gamers turned GT Academy champions will be on hand” at the venue, which is “well supported by a host of other manufacturers as well, such as Audi, BMW, Ford, Honda, Jaguar, KTM, Mercedes-Benz, Tesla and Toyota. Real-life versions of their cars, old and new, familiar to the legions of passionate Gran Turismo fans will be on display and on-track as part of the event.”

Kazunori Yamauchi, the driving force behind the series from the very onset, will be present at Silverstone and he is said to reveal additional details about the game. Rumors suggest that the game could make it to store shelves towards the end of 2013, but an official date may be announced at the Silverstone track later today.
