Volvo is looking to expand its lineup of cars, as it currently doesn’t really cover many niches. They need a crossover of small dimensions and a replacement for the S40, which is exactly what they’re doing, according to Automobile Magazine.

The Chinese-owned automaker is apparently very interested in making a sales-boosting small crossover, which may be called XC40. It would find a place in their range, in between the V40 Cross Country and the XC60, and take the fight to BMW, Mercedes and Audi, who sell the X1, Q3 and GLA in the same market sector.

Next up is a successor to the S40 compact sedan, which is currently being co-developed by Volvo and owners Geely. The platform is smaller than the previously announced Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA), and it touted as being very flexible and cost-efficient.

Finally, the most important piece of this article, the proposed C60 coupe, which would use the SPA architecture as well. Its styling will take cues from the sleek P1800 of the 1960s, so a little bit of retro is to be expected – it should arrive in 2016.

Volvo needs more models in its range, but if this report is accurate, then they are definitely on the right track, especially with the small crossover which people will go crazy for, if priced correctly – the coupe is not to be neglected, but we’re skeptical as to it actually being materializing into a real car. We hope to be proven wrong in our negative assumptions, though.
