Heavily modifying a car from its stock form will obviously negate the combined efforts of the manufacturers to make their cars safer, greener and easier to drive. In fact, in the case of a front-wheel drive car, moving the engine to the middle and redirecting drive to the back means that, mechanically-speaking, the car is a completely different beast altogether compared to the model it shares its basic body shell with.

This Mk. 4 VW GTI / Golf GTI recently caught our eye, as it uses a 2.7-liter V6 Audi engine, which has been bored and stroked to 3.0-liters and fitted with a big turbo. It churns out around 800-horses, but could go even higher with a different turbocharger. Did we mention that is positioned where the rear seat bench used to be?

Looking at the back, you will find a custom roll cage that is also part of the frame and holds the engine, while the builders also used Porsche 911 rear suspension components. Another neat touch I noticed are the 911 wheels, which are from a ‘period correct’ model, the 996, built from 1998 to 2004.

The car was developed and built by 034Motorsport, probably at great financial expense, but is now for sale at only $60,000, which may seem like a lot for a Golf, but it is probably, realistic, given all the work that went into creating the car.
