In less than 12 months from now, the second generation of the Volkswagen Touareg SUV will hit the four-year mark, and we all know what that means for modern-day German cars: yes, it’s facelift time, which is why the Wolfsburg-based company is taking out disguised prototypes for testing.

The strategically placed black camouflage of this Touareg hints at a redesign for the front and rear ends, but we won’t be able to say for sure until VW begins to peel back the layers of plastic wraps. A light touch up of the interior and its equipment features and gadgets could also be in store.

Together with the Touareg, the VW Group is also working on a refreshed version of its sister model, the Porsche Cayenne. The reason why we mention this is that it is believed the 2015 Cayenne will likely gain the facelifted 2014 Porsche Panamera’s 3.0-liter bi-turbo V6 gasoline unit with 414hp (420PS) and the 410hp plug-in hybrid V6 powerplant. Being that the two models are built around the same platform and share many of their components, we could see one or perhaps even both of these engines being offered on the updated Touareg, albeit in a different state of tune.
