When our spies caught up with a slightly modded version of the sold-out Audi R8 GT testing on the Nürburgring last year, we were wondering what Ingolstadt was up to, since it had already introduced the facelifted R8 family.

Now, with these latest spy shots, we can partially provide an answer to that question as a camouflage-free R8 GT prototype made its appearance on the German track again, only this time, it’s based on the updated R8 with the new LED front and rear lights, while also doing away with the vented hood.

We say partially because we’re not sure if Audi plans a re-run of the high-performance R8 GT (only 333 cars were made) in its refreshed outfit or an even more potent GT Plus edition – the brand with the four rings uses the Plus moniker to identify more powerful versions of its RS and R models.

Compared to the 542hp R8 V10 Plus, the GT (or GT Plus) model has bigger side air-inlets, canards on the front bumper along with a more protruding lip spoiler and, of course, a huge fixed rear wing. Since the previous GT was fitted with a 560 horsepower 5.2-liter V10 engine, this new model, especially if it’s a Plus version, could push the output number closer to the 600hp mark.
