With very few exceptions, most notably the Fiat 500 and Lancia Ypsilon, sub-compact car buyers usually have limited choices when it comes to exterior colors, so even if GM’s new chromatic plum shade called Deep Magenta Metallic isn’t to your taste, it’s a welcome move.

The new plum metallic shade is the first limited-edition color to be offered for the Sonic with a second one to be added later this year. The Deep Magenta Metallic will be available exclusively August through October

“We know that about one-third of our Sonic buyers note exterior color as an ‘extremely important’ factor in their purchase process – a higher percentage than other small car buyers,” said Michelle Killen, lead creative designer in General Motors’ color and trim studio and exterior paint expert for Chevrolet.

Right after the Deep Magenta Metallic, Chevrolet will launch its second exclusive hue dubbed the Cool Blue, which the automaker describes as “a greyish, dirty blue” color that will be available on the Sonic from November until March. Furthermore, in the first quarter of 2014, the bow-tie brand will add a Dragon Green hue as a permanent addition to the Sonic lineup.
