It seems that ever since BMW unveiled the Pininfarina-styled Grand Lusso concept earlier this year, it sparked the imaginations of many, who prophesized the return of a new 8-Series-badged luxury coupe, which would be a kind-of Bentley Continental-GT or Mercedes-Benz CL rival of sorts.

Now, while that’s an enticing proposition, especially if said model would build upon the same styling ideals of the Grand Lusso concept, it’s currently not rooted in reality.

The information comes from Autocar, who say they spoke to BMW’s R&D boss. He said that while the concept was very well-received, they have not decided whether or not to put it into production. His exact words were, “we’re looking into the possibility of production, but a decision is still a way off.”

I say that only if they actually decide to use the Pininfarina concept as a base from which they would start designing this new 8-Series will it be a worthwhile exercise… Who’d want to see a larger 6-Series in their range which would look exactly like all their other cars, but be a bit bigger, heavier and more expensive?
