We’re not going to lie; we like the new generation Mazda3’s chiseled body that handsomely dresses an all-around good package that brings a lighter chassis, efficient powertrains and a presentable interior with all the amenities one expects from a modern car these days.

One thing that’s missing, though, at least for the time being, is a performance variant. Yes, we’re talking about a successor to the MazdaSpeed3 in North America, known as Mazda3 MPS in other parts of the world, including Europe.

The Japanese automaker has concentrated its efforts in promoting the regular hatch and sedan versions of the new “3”, and has made no mention of a faster model. Nevertheless, it’s more of a matter of “when” and not “if” Mazda will turbocharge its compact model.

In these digitally manipulated images, courtesy of Remco Meulendijk of RM Design, we see one potential path the company could follow with the design of the MazdaSpeed3. The front and rear ends are more aggressively styled and trimmed, with the bonnet adopting a huger air intake. One thing missing and which we’d like to see, would be a wider set of wheel arches with even bigger wheels.

What do you say?
