With less than two years on its back, the current iteration of the 1-Series hatchback remains a new proposition in the luxury compact segment, but BMW engineers and designers are already at work for a mild refresh that we hear will bring the brand’s new 1.5-liter three-cylinder diesel and gasoline engines to the range.

BMW has already tested prototypes of the 1-Series (read more details here, see videos of the car in action here) fitted with its new 1.5-liter units that will produce between 120Hp to 220Hp when fed with gasoline, and 81Hp to 180Hp when running on diesel.

Just last week, BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer confirmed that these engines will gradually be introduced in Mini and BMW models starting from the end of this year and continuing in 2014.

As for the cosmetic part, this 1-Series appears to be an early test car so there aren’t any visible changes, despite the use of camouflage up front. However, we could see some updates to the car’s front grille, bumpers and possibly the headlamp fixtures.
