Last time we saw Audi’s upcoming compact convertible model, it was wearing one of the regular powerplants of the A3 series. Now, we caught up with a tester of what will likely be the crown jewel of the A3 Convertible series, since we doubt Audi will introduce an RS model, the S3.

The typical identifiers of Audi’s performance orientated “S” series models are all there, including the modified front and rear bumpers, bigger wheels and brake discs, and of course, the quad exhaust pipes flanking the rear diffuser.

If you pop up the bonnet, you’ll find the same 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 296hp (300PS) and 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) of peak torque as on the other members of the S3 family, the three-door hatch, the five-door Sportback and the sedan. The VW Group’s DSG transmissions and Haldex four-wheel drive wearing S-tronic and Quattro branding respectively, will deliver power to the road. For those who like stirring their own gears, a six manual is also expected to be on offer.

We recently heard that Audi might lift the covers off the production model at the Frankfurt motor show, but since this generation of the A3 Convertible will be offered in the States, a world premiere on this side of the Atlantic may be on the table.
