In somewhat disappointing news for fans of the brand, VW’s third world premiere for the upcoming 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show after the already confirmed all-electric e-Golf and the high-performance Golf R with 296hp and AWD will be the less exciting battery-powered e-Up! City car, which we saw in production trim in March and even know its pricing in Germany.

The two newcomers in VW’s European lineup are series production models. Beginning with the e-Golf, the compact hatch is driven by an 85 kW (114hp / 115PS) and 270Nm (199 lb-ft) electric motor that allows the car to reach 100km/h (62mph) in 10.4 seconds and offers an electronically limited top speed of 140 km/h (87mph).

The four-seat e-up! sports an electric motor delivering 60 kW (80hp / 82)PS and 210Nm (155 lb-ft) of torque to the driven front axle, with the city car completing the sprint to 100km/h (62mph) in 12.4 seconds and reaching a maximum speed of 130km/h (81mph).

According to VW’s data, the e-up! consumes 11.7 kWh of electricity per 100 km and the Golf, 12.7 kWh. “Given an electricity price of €0.258 per kWh (Germany, as of 31st July 2013), driving 100 km with the e-up! costs just €3.02 (US$6.46 per 100 miles), and with the e-Golf it is around €3.30 (US$7.06 per 100 miles),” states Volkswagen.

In terms of driving range, the e-up! has 160 km (100 miles) on a single battery charge (18.7 kWh), while the e-Golf with its larger battery (24.2 kWh) offers a range of 190 km (118 miles).
