You have to love modern-day cockpit cameras in racing or regular cars, as they truly give you a first-hand kind of experience from the driver’s perspective. It’s even more fascinating when the camera records a mishap – just as long as no body is hurt, of course, of course…

Chris van der Drift (yes, that’s his real name), a New Zealand-born racer of Dutch descent, had a rather unfortunate accident recently, during the International GT Open Championship 2013 at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium, when his McLaren MP4-12C GT3 lost steering and he crashed into the wall, luckily without getting hurt.

“I managed to slow it down from nearly putting 6th gear to just selecting 2nd gear before impact,” said van der Drift on his YouTube page when asked how he avoided the worst.

The same can’t be said about the McLaren racecar that sustained heavy damages.
