Even though we’re approaching the time when we should be asking where will Smart lift the covers off the new generation of its ForTwo city car, we’re still wondering how the styling lessons learned from the 2011 ForVision and 2012 ForStars concepts will be applied to the production model.

The reason we say this is because Smart continues to this day to test the mechanical underpinnings of the next ForTwo covered under the secrecy of modified bodies of Renault Twingo mules, like the one you’re looking (or laughing, don’t be shy to admit it) at in these spy pictures shot in Europe.

As mentioned before, the Renault Twingo’s replacement and the next Smart ForTwo are being co-developed by the Renault-Nissan Group and Daimler as part of an expansive partnership deal between the two automakers.

The two models will utilize the same modular platform and rear-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive layout, as well as a number of other components, while featuring different lengths, bodies and interiors.
