While the excitement levels in Formula 1 have noticeably gone up in recent years, it’s still nowhere near as balanced or entertaining as more grassroots competitions that are less about the stars, the cash and the advertising, and more about the actual racing. However, we do appreciate an interesting bit of video when we see one, and the selection we have whipped up below falls into that category.

They are excerpts from Sunday’s F1 GP that took place around the famed Monza track, in Italy. Apparently, the company handling the broadcasting fitted thermal cameras to cars, and this lead to some very cool pieces of footage – for those of us who are slightly nerdy about cars, seeing the tires heat up in corners, and cool on the straights really does something…

It’s a fun distraction, and it made my time watching the race a lot more enjoyable. Oddly enough, there aren’t that many clear videos to be found on YouTube, and full HD would have been swell here, as you’re really just staring at specific points for prolonged periods of time. Two of the videos show crashing, so at least there’s still some action too – during the crash, you will also notice how the freshly laid skidmarks also give off a strong heat signature.
