Picture the scenario of your car having been immobilized on the hard shoulder of some dark interstate and the prospect of the tow truck coming to your rescue being driven by a criminal who is going to take it away and sell it for scrap. It’s not a pleasing thought at all, but apparently, it can and has happened.

KSDK reports that “a graveyard shift worker (Mitch Mattingly) got stuck on Interstate 70. His stuck car turned into a stolen car in less than two hours.” The culprit was reportedly driving a tow truck that he used to take the car away, this leading the 911 operator he called to suggest it may have been held at Airport Towing – it wasn’t.

The owner of the company, who is also the head of the Tow Truck Association, said this was not a new occurrence, and that last year, thieves took two of his own trucks, and then played dirty with them, though, they were ultimately caught.

Sadly for Mitch Mattingly, his car is probably in bits by now, as these types of runs always end at the junkyard, where the cars were sold and quickly crushed.
