A horrific crash took place on Sunday at the IndyCar Grand Prix of Houston, Texas. Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti broke two vertebrae and his right ankle and suffered a concussion when his car went airborne into the track’s fence, with at least 13 fans suffering minor injuries because of flying debris.

The accident happened during the final lap of the race, when Franchitti and Takuma Sato were fighting for eighth place. The Scot tried to overtake the Japanese but he clipped the rear end of his car and went airborne. A third car driven by E.J. Viso was also caught up in the incident.

The accident reminded many of Dan Wheldon’s fatal crash from 2011 in Las Vegas, but fortunately, the consequences were not that tragic. That’s because the Dallara DW12 chassis, which carries Dan Wheldon’s initials, has been reinforced thanks to Wheldon’s important testing input in 2011.
