Recently published patent illustrations sourced from China are giving us a fresh look at the upcoming production version of the BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe, which will carve a new niche in the brand’s compact executive car offerings sitting just above the 3-Series.

Depending on which way you view this segment, the Gran Coupe is a four-door version of the new 4-Series Coupe or a sportier looking and handling edition of the 3-Series saloon that rides on a longer wheelbase length than either model.

The 4-Series Gran Coupe’s closest competitor is the Audi A5 Sportback, but unlike Ingolstadt’s model, the BMW will be available in North America where it will launch with a similar engine lineup to the 4-Series, so expect a 4-cylinder 428i and a six-cylinder 435i, both turbocharged, while Europe will likely get diesels as well.
