Speculated at first as a rival to the Mercedes-Benz CL (S-Class Coupe now), or a kind of bigger A7, it seems that Audi still has no idea what it wants its A9 flagship model to be. Autocar magazine reports that the direction it’s set to go in is still under discussion, as well as the fact that a coupe or Sportback model wouldn’t cut it either.

Their information was obtained from the brand’s marketing chief, Luca De Meo, as well as CEO Rupert Stadler, who was quoted as saying: “We see a great deal of potential, especially in the SUV and prestigious full-size car category.” De Meo’s statement is a bit more ambiguous, but helps with painting a picture of what they’re going for.

He added: “If we do something, I would like it to be a statement for the brand. I want Audi to stand for innovation and establishing the future, and a conventional design, while attractive, wouldn’t necessarily stand for that. People but that kind of car for prestige or looks, but I want more than that.”

The model won’t arrive tomorrow, but it’s clear that they want to make it, even if they don’t quite know what it’s going to be yet. The only thing we know for certain, at the moment, is that whatever it is, it would sit above the A8 in the range.
