If you thought your car was impeding access to the twists and turns of the Nurburgring Nordschleife, think again. It’s not your car that’s the problem, but your tolerance to fear, as the video posted below so eloquently reveals.
The driver of the 52 hp Citroen AX, a Frenchman who drove all the way from Bordeaux, explains that it’s his 118th lap of the famed track, and his 10th one in this current session. He added that his car is almost completely stock, including the non-turbo 1.4-liter diesel engine which makes 52 hp. Lugging around a total weight of 720 kg, you can imagine it’s not the slowest car in the world, but then again it’s not fast either.
The trick when trying to press on in such a vehicle is to keep momentum going and not brake (preferably at all). In the case of the AX, its chassis seems to do its job well, and while there is understeer, that’s mostly caused by the ‘not braking technique’ employed… enthusiastically.
Achieving a sub-10 minute time is an amazing feat in a car this low-powered, and it stands as a testament to the driver’s skill and slight degree of (positive) lunacy – few would take those corners that fast in that car…
