If you like the Jaguar XJ, want to drive it yourself and don’t need a sportscar-rivaling zero to sixty time, then the standard spec, standard wheelbase model with a diesel engine is just fine. Leather comes as standard, as well as most of the gadgets you really need, so you don’t have to splash out any more unless you really fancy one of the options boxes.
However, the XJ Ultimate variant is the exact opposite of that. It promises the most powerful engine in the range, the supercharged five-liter V8, the long wheelbase, lots of extra kit and specially tuned suspension that puts rear ride comfort at the forefront of the priorities list.
