The new 2015 Outback will have its world premiere at the 2014 New York International Auto Show on April 16, Subaru confirmed today.

Together with a cropped photo of the all-wheel drive wagon, the Japanese firm issued a short statement in which it said that the “all-new Outback is Subaru’s flagship crossover model, which blends Car-like handling and SUV capability”.

What this means is that Subaru will refine the successful Outback formula utilizing the newest generation Legacy sedan as its base. It’s essentially a Legacy estate with a raised ride height and plastic cladding for American consumers who don’t even want to hear the word ‘station-wagon’.

The new generation of Subaru’s second best-selling model in the States after the Forester should get the same range of characterful ‘boxer’ engines as the latest Legacy, including the revised 175hp 2.5-liter H-4 and a 256hp 3.6-liter H-6 linked to the brand’s CVT transmission.
