McLaren wants to broaden the prospective audience for its upcoming entry-level model, currently known by its internal codename P13.

Apparently, the Woking-based supercar maker will be making three distinct versions of the car, each with a different body; you’ll have the regular coupe, a drop-top version and…a separate spinoff GT model that sounds the most interesting as a rumor, since it offers luggace capacity in the back and hints at possible inspiration from the one-off X-1 (pictured).

It would be a new direction for McLaren, but you really can’t say anything bad about diversity, so it’s a welcome oddity and may reel in new and different customers to anything the brand has seen before – it’s going to be a British-built mid-engined GT car; if you find that appealing, then you’ll find it really appealing…

The information was obtained by Car&Driver; they quote their unnamed inside source as saying it (the GT model) “looks more like an E-type than the Jaguar F-type does.” And that’s odd given that it willl, for all intents and purposes, be nearly mechanically identical to the two other P13 variants.

We’ll be adding more details as soon as we have them.
