The Opel Astra GTC has finally received the all-new 1.6 CDTI engine that is already on offer on the rest of Astra models. Producing 134hp (136PS) and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft), the 1.6-liter engine replaces the 1.7 CDTI and provides more performance and higher torque – 6 hp and 20 Nm more.

With the all-new aluminum turbo diesel engine, the Opel Astra GTC returns 4.1 liters/100 km (57.3 mpg US) and emits 109 g/km of CO2, earning it the German A energy efficiency label. The new engine allows the Astra GTC to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 10.2 seconds and from 80 km/h (50 mph) to 120 km/h (75 mph) in fifth gear in 8.9 seconds instead of the previous 10.5 seconds. Top speed is 198 km/h (123 mph).

The new 1.6 CDTI engine comes with Start/Stop plus a braking energy recuperation system as standard and is mated to an improved six-speed manual transmission which promises better shifting comfort. The 1.6-liter turbo diesel engine is the first unit in the Astra family to already comply with the future Euro 6 emissions standard, making it the cleanest diesel Opel has ever built.

Opel says the engine is the quietest diesel in its class, hence the name ‘whisper diesel’. The Opel Astra GTC with the new engine is already available to order, with prices in Germany starting at €24,390 ($33,154), including VAT.
