You don’t have to look at Jaguar’s virtual windscreen concept in any particular way or angle to see how it could be useful for driving on the motorway, when you’re slightly tired, and also when you take your car onto a track and need all kinds of information conveyed back to  you in real time.

The latter case is highlighted by Jaguar’s official video below. It shows a suggestion of how the system will work, what it will display and how it will display it. Everything is in 3D and it looks like it’s perfectly and seamlessly overlayed with what the driver is actually seeing, in order to be fully effective.

As we saw in the Land Rover Discovery concept, it will be combined with gesture control for basic functions like turning up the radio volume, turning on the wipers or lowering any of the power windows. The supporting tech uses what is known as an ‘e-field,’ and it works a bit like a capacitive touschreen works, the only difference being you wave your arms, hands and fingers in the air, instead of on a flat surface.

Keep in mind that this is not sci-fi, and Jaguar is planning to bring it to market in a commercially viable form within “the next few years.” We’ll bring you follow-ups on this interesting development as soon as we know more.
