We all like to believe that our modern-day cars with their advanced anti-theft systems featuring key coding tech that disable the ignition and cut power, triggering all sorts of fancy visual and audible warnings in the process, keep our rides protected. But if this video from Russia is real, then you should be worried, very worried…
You see, at the same time that automakers are fighting criminals by steadily adding more and better anti-theft technologies, thieves are fighting back by keeping up to date, and so the high-tech tug-of-war between the two continues.
The following episode occurred at a parking lot in St. Petersburg, Russia, just the other day and it was recorded on a nearby vehicle’s dashcam.
In it, we see the alleged owner of the new Range Rover grab something from the passenger seat and leave the car just before the 25-second mark. About 20 seconds later, a black Toyota Camry appears and we see the SUVs lights flash and door mirrors unfold. Apparently, they disabled the alarm and unlocked the Range Rover electronically.
Then one of the men jumps inside the vehicle and turns it on, before the other guy who was acting as if he was talking on the phone, gets in and drives away.
The entire process took a mere 2 minutes and 40 seconds!
