Nothing can kill a Mercedes-Benz G-Class, not even safety and emissions legislation. But an extensive facelift for the venerable SUV is coming soon in order to stave off death.

According to CAR Magazine, the G-Class 463 series will get a seriously comprehensive revision to help it comply with EU pedestrian safety and emissions regulations, as well as adding more modern technology inside.

The report states the 2016 G-Class will be 100mm wider and could be slightly lower, although the overall look will be similar. Inside, a new dashboard will add a new COMAND system more in line with other recent Mercedes models, as well as modern features like radar-guided cruise control.

European customers will get six-cylinder gas and diesel engines from Mercedes’ new engine family, but expect American shoppers to pick from a 4.0-liter turbocharged V8 and the 5.5-liter AMG V8 in the G63.

So modern civility is starting to catch up with the G-Wagen, but its main buyers probably won’t complain.
