The next Porsche Cayman and Boxster models will most likely herald the arrival of new smaller-displacement four-cylinder engines to the range.

These two prototypes that were spotted around the Nürburgring by TouriClips clearly sound very different to what we’ve been used to, making a noise very similar to a Subaru.

So to answer the video’s title caption question, yes, they may very well be hiding a boxer-four in the middle. The Subaru-esque sound signature leaves us in no doubt as to the verdict.

However, in spite of being tested using the current-generation models, the engine(s?) will actually debut along with the next-gen versions of either. What will be interesting to see then is what Porsche does with the naturally-aspirated six-pot units it’s been using so far; will they be retained to power the top-spec GTS or ditched completely?
