Autonomous Audis are now bound for the roads of California, as the brand is the first to get the go-ahead to test them on the state’s public streets.

California’s new legislation affecting the testing of autonomous cars on public roads went into effect Tuesday after they were enacted in 2012.

Audi says it can now test the Piloted driving system in the state where it has its Electronics Research Lab, as well as its partnership with Stanford University that created the Autonomous Audi TTS Pikes Peak.

Now with research planned to adapt the Piloted driving system for freeway conditions, Audi expects it could offer such a system to the public in five years.
