The Golden State is officially the Green State when it comes to electric vehicle ownership, as there are now 100,000 of the plug-in cars roaming California.

The milestone was reached last week, according to the Los Angeles Times. The California Plug-In Electric Vehicle Collaborative is keeping the tally.

California Governor Jerry Brown had set a goal of 1.5 million EVs on the state’s roads by 2025. With this achievement, California claims home to more than 40 percent of all plug-in vehicles in the country. A very high percentage, but perhaps not entirely surprising.

Some of the consumer acceptance for EVs must be attributed to generous incentives of late on many plug-in vehicles, as well as the state’s $2,500 incentive for the cars. But with more and more public charging stations, it’s getting harder to make the convenience argument.

So while only 1 percent of U.S. households have plug-in vehicles right now, California is showing that they are in fact being accepted by some car buyers.
