Remember Mat Watson’s experiment with the 16-year-old Mazda MX-5 tuned with performance parts worth £4,000 in order to make it quicker than a brand new standard Porsche Boxster?

Well, Auto Express has now released part two of the challenge, in which the upgraded MX-5 takes on the Boxster both in a drag race and on the circuit.

As a reminder, in the first episode the Mazda received a supercharger, a stronger clutch, lighter flywheel, adjustable coilover suspension, bigger disc brakes and new Yokohama tyres in order to stand a chance against the Porsche.

While we’ll let you find out for yourself the outcome of the duel, we’ll tell you that the Mazda MX-5 managed to shorten its lap time from 1:23.70 in standard trim to an impressive 1:16.10 after the tuning job – an improvement of 7 seconds and six tenths. But was that enough to beat the very competent Porsche Boxster? Scroll down to find out.
