Formula 4 “is an open-wheel racing car category intended for junior drivers,” according to Wikipedia. There’s no actual world championship, but there are several national or trans-regional ones.

Engines for the series have been supplied, up until now, by Fiat (plus Abarth), Ford and Toyota, but as of 2015 a new and very different name will be added to that list: Geely, the owners of Volvo.

The Chinese automaker is no stranger to motorsport, as it co-developed the China Formula Grand Prix car (basically an F4-spec machine itself). It’s actually the first PRC-based manufacturer to dabble in the world of racing.

Now, China’s F4 championship will be called “China Formula 4” for the first time and Geely will be providing the 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engines needed.

The engine is a tuned racing version of the unit used n the GX7 SUV and Emgrand EC8 sedan.
