Ford announced that the all-new Mondeo will be available with a range-topping 2.0-liter diesel engine featuring twin sequential-turbocharging delivering 210PS (207hp) and 450Nm (332lb-ft) of torque from 2,000 rpm.

The high-powered diesel will be available in early 2015 and will replace the current 200PS (197hp) 2.2-liter TDCi engine, with Ford promising significantly reduced CO2 emissions for the new engine.

The unit features electronically-controlled twin sequential turbocharging which enables faster engine response. A small, low-inertia turbine is used to respond quickly to initial boost demand, while a larger high-inertia turbo delivers greater boost pressure for peak performance.

The Mondeo’s diesel lineup will also feature a 2.0-liter TDCi unit with single variable geometry turbocharger technology, available in two states of tune: 150PS (148hp) and 180PS (178hp). All three 2.0-litre TDCi variants feature a revised engine block, new cylinder-head and fuel injection designs, as well as Ford’s NOX trap exhaust after-treatment system for cleaner emissions.

The 150PS and 180PS diesels will be available with Ford’s Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system. An ECOnetic Technology model will also be on offer, powered by a 1.6-liter diesel with estimated CO2 emissions of 94 g/km.

The petrol lineup will include the 1.0-liter EcoBoost 3-cylinder engine with 125PS (123hp) available in early 2015, the 1.5-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder with 160PS (158hp) and the 2.0-liter EcoBoost available in two states of tune: 203PS (200hp) and 240PS (237hp).

The all-new Mondeo will also feature the nameplate’s first-ever hybrid model, which will combine a specially-developed 2.0-liter petrol engine with two electric motors (one to drive the wheels and another to supply regenerative charging) and a 1.4kWh lithium-ion battery which should last 10 years or 150,000 miles (241,402 km). The Mondeo Hybrid is expected to deliver 99 g/km CO2.

All engine variants will be equipped with Active Grille Shutter, Smart Regenerative Charging, Electronic Power Assisted Steering and Auto-Start-Stop systems.

The new Mondeo will inaugurate a new pedestrian detection technology that can identify people in the road ahead, or who could cross the vehicle’s path, and automatically apply the brakes if the driver does not respond to warnings. Offered as an option, the new Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection processes information collected from a windshield-mounted camera and radar located in the bumper, and checks it against a database of “pedestrian shapes” to distinguish people from typical roadside scenery and objects.
