The Ford Transit is among the last vehicles that spring to mind when it comes to tuning, but that hasn’t stopped the automaker from preparing a fleet of custom vans for SEMA.
Five custom-built project vehicles from five coachbuilders will showcase the Transit van’s flexibility and capability, including Formula DRIFT, off-road adventure and high-end luxury versions.
The Vegas Off-Road Experience Transit is probably the most interesting of the concepts. Built by the VORE group, the custom Transit combines luxury transportation with an off-road theme. Equipped with off-road wheels and tires, this Transit will be used for guest transportation at VORE events.
The van features off-road and premium equipment including custom LED interior lighting, five LED flat screens, 60-inch LED flat-screen partition, large-screen TV for external viewing, video gaming station, touch-screen tablet controls, LED light bars, HID headlamps, extended fender flares and off-road wheels and tires.
The Designed Travel Transit is another custom concept built for long-distance road trips by Waldoch Crafts and 3dCarbon and Air Design. Based on a long-wheelbase, medium-roof Transit, the concept features a solid hickory wood floor and four reclining captain’s chairs with heating, cooling and massage functions, along with power headrests.
Other features include integrated front bumper with air dam and fog lamps, side skirts and lower rear skirt with integrated trailer hitch cover, 20-inch wheels and tires, rear seat with fold-down sofa, tablet control system, 4K ultra-high-definition 50-inch TV, LED interior lighting and backup camera with 360-degree capability.
The Formula DRIFT Transit is not just a concept, as it will be used at series events in 2015. The medium-roof, short-wheelbase Transit has been transformed it into a track safety and support vehicle. The custom Transit will help with fire and safety equipment at accident sites. The van features a custom interior workspace with TV, LED lighting, a custom entertainment system from Clarion and a matching Kawasaki Mule support vehicle.
The all-black Business Class Transit was created by Detroit Custom Coach to offer amenities for VIP travel. This long-wheelbase, high-roof Transit features seating for as many as eight people and a series of premium features, including cocktail stations, wood-grain flooring, laptop station, flat-screen TVs, integrated iPad controls, Wi-Fi and motorized privacy shades.
Finally, the Galpin Auto Sports Transit Skyliner created by Ford and Galpin Auto Sports shows how the Transit can be transformed to fit the needs of limousines and high-end transportation services, as well as commercial fleets, shuttle providers and small-business owners.
