Mercedes-Benz isn’t quiet done yet with the M-Class SUV that will receive a mid-cycle facelift and quite possibly, a new GLE name, from next year.

That’s not all, as the Germans are also working on a plug-in hybrid version of the luxury model that our spies caught while charging its batteries before entering the Nürburgring circuit.

What’s not clear from these scoop shots is which powertrain is lurking under the hood as Mercedes could use a more fuel-efficient new four-cylinder petrol-based lump connected to an electric motor or the existing drive unit from the S500 PHEV that pairs a 328hp 3.0-liter turbo V6 to a 107hp electric motor.

Elsewhere, the refreshed M-Class / GLE will get a redesigned front end that will align its looks with the upcoming MLC, a new infotainment system and revised interior, and some changes to the rest of the engine lineup such as the addition of a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 with 329hp (333PS).
