The end is approaching for the Land Rover Defender as we know it, but Jaguar Land Rover’s new Special Operations unit is prepared to give the icon a fitting farewell.

Speaking to Autocar, Special Operations head John Edwards said part of the team behind the bonkers Range Rover Sport SVR and Jaguar F-Type Project 7 would be responsible for final run versions of the Defender next year.

Edwards implied that the final Defender special editions would pay tribute to the car’s off-road triumphs, and include models relating to the Camel Trophy and Paris-Dakar.

He also said the SVR badge that premiered on the Range Rover Sport will be extended to Jaguar models, though how Jag SVRs will be differentiated from the R and R-S cars has yet to be determined.

But Brits will undoubtedly await the special editions commemorating the Defender’s long service – and the rest of us will still wait for whatever Land Rover brings as its successor.
