We were recently warned that Jaguar’s second go with the XF would be an evolutionary step in design and the latest prototypes seem to support this.

The camouflaged tester looks a lot like a bigger XE, itself featuring a design closely modeled after the original XF. Jaguar has hinted that the next revolution in design will come with their flagship XJ expected in 2017.

Compared to the current, first generation XF, the new model will have a lower and more upright nose, tauter surfaces and less frumpy rear end with a shallower windscreen.

It’s not only the design that will be fairly common between the XE and XF, but the chassis as well, since both are built on Jaguar-Land Rover’s (JLR) new iQ[Al] aluminum architecture – stretched, of course, for Jaguar’s BMW 5-Series rival. The lighter platform should result in a weight reduction of around 100kg (220 pounds).

We’ll also see some engine sharing between the two, with the new XF adopting Jag’s new line of Ingenium four-cylinder turbocharged lumps, including the higher-powered 240PS (237hp) 2.0-liter petrol. Supercharged V6 and V8 petrol engines, as well as a V6 diesel like the one fitted on the prototype will also be available on the XF.

If not all, most units will be paired to a nine-speed automatic transmission with start-and-stop, driving either the rear- or all-four wheels.

The new XF should come to life within the next year.
