Need more proof that Fiat’s 500 nameplate has kind of lost its meaning over the years?

It’s one thing reading about the differences in size between the original 500 from the 1950s/1960s and one of its modern namesakes, the 500L, and quite another seeing them parked side-by-side in real life.

Once upon a time, Fiat’s 500 or Cinquecento moniker was used on a single model lineup in the most compact of compact categories, that of city cars.

The success of Fiat’s reborn 500 hatch, which did indeed adapt the original formula to today’s grown-up needs, led the Italians to believe that they discovered the golden automotive goose and they’ve started placing all of their eggs in just one basket – from city cars, to minivans and crossovers.
