Audi has just revealed an updated version of its A1 and A1 Sportback premium superminis. The model’s look has been updated (quite extensively, despite looking subtle at first) and it’s actually around 2 cm / 0.8 in longer as a result of the changes (we assume it’s all just extra overhang). The engine range has also been revamped and three-cylinder units have been added for the first time.

Design-wise, the revised A1 gets a reshaped grille and new headlight / rear light designs à la S1, as well as new/more paint finish options. The interior only features minor changes, and it’s what’s under the bonnet that’s most noteworthy.

The A1 is, for the first time ever, available with three-cylinder engines. The entry level unit is the 1.0-liter TFSI, which pumps out 95 PS and promises to return 4.3 l/100km or 54.7 mpg US, while at the same time dipping just below the 100 g/km CO2 mark.

Another new three-pot is the 1.4-liter TDI with 90 PS. It’s claimed to use just 3.4 l/100km or 69.2 mpg US and pump out a 89 g/km CO2.

Audi says all the six engines the A1 can be had with are either new or heavily updated. There’s also a new electromechanical steering system that makes sure “the driver has optimal assistance in all driving situations. The power assist is reduced as vehicle speed increases. In the newly created sport equipment line, the tuning is stiffer, but it is more comfortable than in the previous model.”
