A Chicago area Buick and GMC dealership has come up with an unusual Black Friday promotion for buyers who order a new car this Friday and Saturday.

Called a “White Friday” sale, Bill Kay Buick GMC’s promotion is offering free vehicles to shoppers who are willing to bet (and win) that it will snow more than 6 inches (152.4mm) on Christmas.

The Downers Grove dealership says anyone who walks into its store Friday or Saturday and buys or leases a new Buick or GMC vehicle will be refunded if snow exceeds 6 inches on Christmas. The company expects $1 million in sales on Black Friday and says winning buyers will be reimbursed by its insurance company.

The terms of the promotion are pretty specific: the snow fall will be determined at the weather station at O’Hare International Airport and the snow must fall from 12 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. on December 25.

Chances for that to happen are rather slim though, with historical data showing that the Chicago area has only a 40 to 50 percent chance of snow on Christmas. According to the climatologist’s office in Illinois, the most it has snowed on Christmas Day at O’Hare since 1958 is 2.5 inches (63.5mm), in 1965. However, meteorologists have predicted a snowy winter.
