Skoda executives believe the best strategy for future models is to enhance practicality by offering more interior and luggage space than competitor models.

This philosophy is clear on the new Fabia, which offers class-leading boot space although it is shorter than many of its rivals, at just 4 meters (157.5in). The trend will continue on other future models too, which will “deliver on the company’s brand values of roominess at a reasonable price,” Dr. Frank Welsch, Skoda’s board member for technical development, told Autocar magazine.

According to the executive, the next-generation Superb will have a longer wheelbase than the new Volkswagen Passat while still being under 5 meters (196.8in) long. Welsch also revealed that the third-generation Superb will be unveiled in less than six months. “The Rapid is 4.3m long and the Octavia 4.6m long, so you can see how the Superb will slot in at the top of the range,” Welsch said.

He also hinted that the successor to the 4.2m-long Yeti SUV will probably have a 100mm (3.9in) longer wheelbase to improve rear legroom and boot volume. As for the upcoming large SUV, although Welsch didn’t talk about it, the model is likely to be based on the same version of the MQB architecture as the next Superb.

Welsch added that differentiation will be further extended for Skoda models sold in China, which probably means they will feature extended wheelbases.
