DeLoreans are famous for not being painted, sporting a bare stainless steel finish that only adds to their charm. However, this example is red and looking really good, plus it’s been looked after and has only done 918 miles (1578 km) since new.

It was up for grabs on eBay until the other day, with the winning bid reaching $48,100. The car, built in 1982, is currently located in Morgan Hill, California and it has an interesting story behind it.

Apparently, it was owned for the better part of thirty years by a gentleman who’s now 90 years old and unable to use it any more. It was originally bought because his daughter fancied it, although the reason behind it being painted red is unclear.

The finish looks pretty good, and while it somewhat ruins the familiar look of a DeLorean, it’s by no means bad in red. In fact, had they been painted different colors, red would have probably been one of the more popular ones.
