In 2013, Bentley delivered 10,120 vehicles worldwide and its plan called for 15,000 by 2018. Now, though, the VW-owned luxury automaker is setting its sights higher with a 20,000 sales target by 2020.

At least that’s what company CEO Wolfgang Duerheimer (pictured with the EXP-9F SUV concept) told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung; and a Bentley spokesman did confirm the German publication’s report: “Mr. Duerheimer did say we are aiming for 20,000 a year by the end of the decade – it’s a nice goal to have.”

Key to Bentley’s growth will be the new SUV that’s due to hit the market in 2016. The hardcore Bentley fans and owners may scoff at the notion of such a model but the reality is that luxury SUVs are what the global markets, and especially the leading one, i.e. China, want.

Companies are after revenue and profit and this segment is booming, so it’s only natural for automakers to join, no matter how loud the dissidents’ voices are.
