Some i8 owners will soon be receiving a recall notice from BMW which has discovered a potential fire risk present in some of the cars manufactured so far.

We don’t know if an actual fire prompted the manufacturer to issue the recall of the 223 cars it believes to be affected, but whenever fire is even a possibility, things need to be addressed as soon as possible.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the problem seems to be with “a bolt used to attach and secure the vehicle’s fuel tank to the vehicle chassis,” which “may not have properly welded during manufacturing.” It “could cause a fuel leak,” and “In the presence of an ignition source, a fuel leak could cause a vehicle fire.”

We could jokingly say the i8 passed the sports car test, now that we know it too is susceptible to fire, but seeing a burnt CFRP body smoldering on the side of the road would not be a pleasant sight.
