After rolling out lots of new models since Fiat started calling the shots, Chrysler is now turning to its engines for a revamp and some modern technology.
According to a report from AutoNews, Chrysler is expected to add features such as direct injection and turbos to its line of Pentastar V6s. The Pentastar upgrade, improving on a line of V6s that was launched with the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee and developed back in the pre-Fiat days, includes an upgrade to the existing 3.6-liter V6 in the Jeep and a number of other vehicles.

A more efficient and more powerful 3.6 is rumored for a facelifted Grand Cherokee in about a year’s time.

Also rumored to be part of the upgrades to that engine and the 3.2-liter found in the Jeep Cherokee is turbocharging, making a rival to Ford’s Ecoboost V6s and possibly the twin-turbo V6 in Cadillacs.

Chrysler hasn’t had many direct injected or turbocharged gas engines in its lineup, running somewhat counter to what the industry has been heading towards over the last several years.

A turbocharged V6, however, poses a threat to the company’s popular Hemi V8s. But with ever-tightening emissions and fuel economy standards, it may be a necessity.
