The first BMW 5-Series to ever wear the M5 badge was the E28 and we found one in a great condition on eBay.

What stands out on this example and the reason why we actually clicked on the ebay ad are those slick Euro bumpers and unevenly sized twin headlamps on either side that give the 1988 M5 such an elegant yet simultaneously aggressive look, unlike the original North American model with the government-mandated bumpers that are the automotive equivalent of dental braces.

According to the seller, the cost for the front and rear bumper and fascia conversion “was nearly $7,000 using all the correct factory parts”.

The car itself has 135,400 miles (217,905 km) on the odometer having being delivered to Gebhardt Motors in Boulder, Colorado on November 18, 1987, before finding its first home on July 12, 1988.

Since it’s a North American specification M5, it has BMW’s less powerful S38B35 straight-six that was rated at 256HP and 243 lb-ft (330 Nm), paired to a five-speed manual box.

The asking price is on the high side at $37,990, but ebay’s “Make Offer” option is marked, so you could get a better deal.
