Ford says its EcoBoost engines offered on performance models like the Fiesta ST, Focus ST and Mustang are easy to upgrade via ECU tuning.

Offered through its Ford Racing division, the ProCal hand-held programmer can modify engine performance by adjusting several engine parameters. Ford says performance gains are up to 90 lb-ft (122 Nm) of torque in cars like the Focus ST, without losing the Ford-backed limited warranty.

For the moment, the ProCal programming handset is available for Focus ST’s 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine and Fiesta ST’s 1.6-liter unit, for a purchase price of $595 (€488). The device plugs into the car’s diagnostic link connector port in the driver’s side footwell and taps into the many aspects of the car’s performance. Ford says the tool can alter various parameters including throttle response characteristics, idle speed, turbo wastegate control, fuel curves and spark timing.

Ford Racing is also developing custom engine calibrations for the all-new Mustang 2.3-liter EcoBoost, with a product expected to arrive on the market by the end of 2015.

For customers who are not concerned about maintaining their factory warranty, Ford is also working with aftermarket tuning companies to offer high-performance accessories, some of which were showcased at this year’s SEMA Show.
