An overly enthusiastic Canadian driver of a Lamborghini Murcielago received an unwelcome surprise on Sunday after losing control of the Italian exotic.

We don’t know if he was racing the Dodge Viper that was filmed following closely on from behind just before he needled through traffic on the right lane of Highway 99 in South Surrey south of Vancouver, Canada, but the end result was a wreck.

The Murcielago went off the road and into a ditch before striking a fence, causing significant damage to the car, according to CBC News.

Surrey RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet told the news station that the 27-year old driver and his 19-year old passenger, both from Edmonton, “are lucky to be okay”. He added that the driver received a large fine for “unsafe passing, speeding, as well as driving without due care, and is facing over $700 in fines as a result of these charges,” which is a drop in the ocean compared to the repair bill and higher insurance premium that he faces.

H/T to Jalopnik!
