The highly anticipated Alfa Romeo Spider based on the all-new Mazda MX-5 roadster is dead. According to reports, Fiat Group has decided to utilize the new MX-5 roadster platform for a new range-topping Abarth roadster instead.

As early as March, sources within Fiat had already hinted that the Italian automaker considered reassigning the Alfa Romeo-Mazda project for the Abarth badge. Now, new reports also reveal that Alfa Romeo has elected to develop a brand-new Spider model completely in-house.

“As far as the Spider goes, the final version is of course no longer the two-seater FCA codeveloped with Mazda, but a derivative of project Giorgio,” said Alfa Romeo and Maserati brand chief Harald Wester in an interview with CAR Magazine. The Alfa Romeo Giorgio project refers to a new range of vehicles based on a midsize rear or all-wheel drive platform. It is safe to assume that a Giorgio platform Alfa Romeo Spider will be significantly bigger in size than the MX-5-derived model as well.

It is too early to report more specific details regarding the new Alfa Romeo Spider project, but we are definitely looking forward to more Italian sports cars on the road, especially after the highly acclaimed debut of the Alfa Romeo 4C. Stay tuned as we learn more about the upcoming Fiat Abarth roadster and Alfa Romeo Spider in the months ahead.
