The VW Passat has traditionally been a favorite of Germany’s law enforcement agencies, so it’s only natural that the latest generation model will get a police version as well.
VW is previewing a future Passat police vehicle with the Passat GTE police car concept, based on the plug-in hybrid version of the estate model. Featuring a blue-silver police livery as well as acoustic and visual signaling systems, the vehicle meets all the tactical mission requirements, according to VW.
Other special features are the modern digital radio and gun racks in the passenger door. Being a Variant, the Passat also offers enough space for police equipment such as warning lights or traffic cones.
VW has chosen the GTE plug-in hybrid version as a basis for this concept, which means there are 218PS (215hp) and 400Nm (295lb-ft) available for the driver, with the car offering over 1,000 km (621 miles) of combined driving range, up to 50 km (31 miles) of which in all-electric mode.
The Passat GTE police car should be fast enough to catch most criminals, as it sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in less than 8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 220 km/h (137 mph). In all-electric mode, top speed is limited to 130 km/h (81 mph).
