Just when everyone thought a convertible Range Rover Evoque is off the table for good, a drop-top Evoque prototype was spotted on UK roads.

Despite previous reports that dismissed plans for a production Evoque cabriolet, the prototype spotted by an Autocar reader in the Midlands region of England suggests that Land Rover is preparing to bring the drop top SUV into production.

Just like the concept car, the prototype featured a black fabric roof, while the bodywork wore heavy camouflage gear. Talk of a drop-top Evoque started in 2012 when Land Rover launched the Evoque Convertible Concept (pictured), based on the three-door version of the SUV.

At the time Land Rover said there was a chance for the study to be produced depending on how the public would receive it, but last year a report said there wasn’t a business case for the Evoque convertible. However, it appears that the car will actually go into production and we may see it on the road less than a year from now.

The Range Rover Evoque Convertible is expected to debut along with a significant mechanical refresh of the SUV, including the addition of Jaguar Land Rover’s new Ingenium family of four-cylinder engines.
